Camp Verde – Protecting Settlers During Apache Wars

<JUMP LINK – Select this to scroll directly to Other Informative Camp Verde Websites>

Because the mining economy caused a rapid increase in population, the hunting and gathering environments were disrupted for the native American tribes. The Apache and Yavapai tribes turned to raid settlers’ crops for food. These settlers asked for protection from the military. Military camps, forts, and outposts sprung up around the area.

If you are planning to relocate, take some time to visit the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. It will give you a chance to learn about the rich history of the area. The weather is pretty mild. Because the area is located at 3147 feet and just below the mountains on the leeward side, there is some protection offered. The summer rains make the valley green and lush. Camp Verde is centrally located and only 90 miles north of Phoenix and 42 miles south of Flagstaff. It is 20 miles to Sedona, 26 miles to Jerome, 16 miles to Cottonwood and 40 miles to the territorial capital of Prescott.

Native American Culture pervades the entire Verde Valley area. Yavapai-Apache inhabited this area hundreds and hundreds of years before the first white man came here to settle. Remnants from their occupation of these local lands are everywhere. Many areas in our canyons and red rocks are considered sacred Indian lands and we have to be cognizant of this as we go about our daily business. We need to be respectful of the heritage and also honor the people who came before us.

The Yavapai-Apache reservation spans 665 acres in the four communities of CampVerde, Middle Verde, Clarkdale, and Rimrock.
