How Is The Sedona Weather In Spring?

By the end of March, the leaves on the Japanese Maple tree above were just starting to bud. During the first week of April, the tree finally started to show the leaves. To me, this marks spring at my home.  I have had bulbs already sprout and flower and the plum trees that line our main highway in Sedona blossomed over a month ago. 

As for the rain… March came in like a lion. This weather station at the Coffeepot Cottages has been keeping records for 125 months. This is only the fifth time that we have recorded more than 5 inches of rain in a single month.  For the first 3 months, we recorded 7.12 inches.  Last year’s El Niño conditions created 9.1 inches of rain and in 2010 the highest first-quarter total of 9.6 inches of rain. 2010 was considered a moderate El Niño year.  2019 was considered a weak El Niño year.  I would note that in the chart below, 2016 was the highest year of rain recorded by our weather station.  2016 was considered a strong El Niño. March was the coolest since 2017. There were a lot of storms that came through Sedona.  Even when you can expect warmer weather as the days get closer to April, we ended up with snow flurries! These flurries were on and off all day.  It really did feel like winter! The video below shows the snow flurries.

Much Warmer Temps

Looking back to February, we almost broke 70º on 2/21/20.  One-third of the month was above 65º. These temps were spread out throughout February. The medium temperature was 5º higher than last year and the low temperature was 11º higher than last year’s low.  February was still cooler than in other years. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, the medium temp was 48.2º to almost 50º.  A 50º temperature is spring-like in Sedona. Low humidity means light sweater conditions.

Sedona Real Estate Spring Selling Season Starts In January

Our spring selling season starts in mid to late January.  Many people from colder states are visiting and want to see homes or condo get-aways.  Of course,  Cactus League Baseball season starts on February 22nd and baseball fans are visiting pre-season and taking advantage of Valentines’ Day, Presidents Weekend, the Sedona International Film Festival, Spring Break, and the much warmer weather. Hiking is HUGE this time of year.

Pandemic Guidelines Catch Up To Sedona…

Of course, the baseball pre-season was interrupted by the COVID 19 pandemic. See the Arizona Department of Health Services recommendations and COVID 19 statistics. Find information on Arizona Governor Ducey’s Executive Order detailing “Essential Services“. Trailheads in Sedona are closed during Physical Distancing Guidelines. Sedona restaurants closed to take-out only on March 20, 2020. 

Temperature Almanac

This March, about two-thirds of the days were over 60º for a high. We did get into the 70ºs for 3 days. To put that into perspective, in 2019 and 2018 there were 10 days in the 70º each of those March months. In 2017, there were 8 days in the 80ºs!  In comparison, this March was chilly!

Juniper Pollen Still Here…

Note: Our Junipers continue to hold pollen. Sedona got a lot of rain in 2019 (23.47 inches and over and over 32 inches of snow) which has helped our Juniper Trees bloom more than ever before. The rain in March helped to dilute the problem, however, we also are continuing to get just enough wind to loosen that pollen and send it in the air!
