Sedona Weather for March 2019

March Weather Category Summary

The month of March mirrored the saying “March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb”. Though it was not quite as warm as 2018, Sedona March weather 2019 was roughly a very similar temperature pattern. However, the leaves on our Japanese Maple tree are just coming in now! Last year the leaves started coming in the third week March.

At the beginning of the month, it felt like spring was trying to break through. Some days were in the 60ºs and some were not.  The low temps were the same.  Some days started out below 32º and others were above.  By St. Patricks Day, spring was breaking through. Flowers were in bloom along with the trees!  It was so nice to turn off the heater and open the windows to get that fresh air in.

Time Change – See How It Affects Arizona and Hawaii

Posted by On

No Time Change in Arizona or Hawaii!

Arizona Stays On Mountain Standard Time (MST) All Year Long

Time Change? What time change? As the rest of the country prepares to “gain” or “lose” an hour of sleep,  Arizona and Hawaii will have a normal day as always.  No clocks are moved backward during Fall or forward during Spring. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time (MST) all year long.

The current dates of the time change for most of the USA are as follows:  Clocks are set 1 hour forward on the second Sunday of March moving to Daylight Savings, while on the first Sunday of November, the clocks are moved back to Standard Time.

The One Exception…

The Navajo Nation observes Daylight Savings Time. This affects areas, especially in Northern Arizona.  So, they will be setting their clocks back with the rest of the country!

Island Territories Also Do Not Observe DST

Areas such as American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands also do not observe DST.  There are many states are considering staying on one particular time. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future! Most of the time there is a lot of grumbling going on but nothing changes. After a day or two everybody is in their new routine. Time Change - Arizona Mountain Standard Time

How Time Change Affects Arizona

For those of us in Arizona who deal across multiple time zones,  we have to adjust the time change in our head.  It can take a couple of days to a few weeks depending on how en-grained the previous time change across the country affected you.  Our national media adjusts their schedule and all our programming moves one way or the other.

Air Transportation May Change Schedules Due To Time Changes

Air or transportation travel schedules may also change. We missed a flight one time because we came to the airport too late to board the plane! We did not realize that the flight had been moved up an hour to accommodate the schedule of other areas with the time change.

Though our sleep pattern is not affected, there are other considerations that do affect the states and territories that do not observe DST.  One big consideration is to make sure all your computers and GPS related devices that sync up with the National Time Center. Do not check or uncheck Daylight Savings Time. Why? The time will automatically be adjusted in the device – whether it is a computer or a clock on a nightstand.  You will know by the switch located somewhere on the clock.

Time Change - Arizona Mountain Standard Time

In My Opinion…

Personally, I am very fine with it being dark in the morning with a little bit more daylight in the evening in the winter. We get to sleep in the dark! By 7:15 am Sedona time, it is light enough to see and be outside if you need to be.  The sun may not rise until around 8 am but visibility is no issue. It is nice not having to worry about changing all the clocks! Even in the summer months, having sunlight at 4:30 am is fine with me because the weather is pleasant enough to be outside gardening or walking or hiking!

Soldiers Pass – Red Rocks and Luxury Homes

Soldiers Pass is a very special place to live. It is located just west of Uptown Sedona. The road goes back a little more than a mile and it winds and bends it’s way through Soldiers Pass.  You get to see the many faces of Coffeepot Rock as you work you way through the pass. To the right of the road you will see the Sphinx and the Mittens further right you can easily see Ship Rock and The Fin.

Soldiers Pass – Close to Everything

Besides being three to five minutes from shopping, grocery stores, professional services and restaurants, Soldiers Pass is home to the lighted ball parks of Posse Grounds Park along with basketball courts, Sedona plunge, and a first class skate park and teen center.  It is also home an amphitheater that holds concerts. Of course, we can not underscore all the wonderful trails to explore. Trails that most homes can access within walking distance from their front door!

Up Against Forest Service and Red Rocks

At the very end of Soldiers Pass right under Coffeepot Rock, you will find the Cottages of Coffeepot. As you travel toward the entrance you will see Coffeepot Rock in the foreground and Thunder Mountain in the back of Coffeepot Rock.

Record February 2019 Sedona Snowfall ~ Soldiers Pass West Sedona AZ

Posted by On

Record Sedona Snowfall!

Cottages At Coffeepot

2016

Three years ago in 2016, Sedona had a very spring like February. In most years the Sedona spring kicks in starting February. For example, 17 days had temps in the 70ºs. In fact, 12 days were above 75º. One day hit 80º!

2017 – 2018

In 2017, there were 11 days above 60º and that started early in the month (Feb. 4th). Only 6 days dipped below 32º for a low temp in the morning.  In 2018, 39 days were above 60º and 26 of those days happened in January.

Snow in January and February was a little over 4 inches for each year.  The snow in Sedona generally will evaporate in less than a day and there is no ice accumulation especially if these areas are in the sun.

 El Niño

During an El Niño climate shift, the U.S. Southwest as well as the southern part of the United States experiences a wet and in some places, a colder climate with more snow than usual. The warming of the Pacific Ocean generally develops between April and June and will peak in December and January. The affects of this condition have been noticeable this 2019 winter season.

2019 – An Unusual Winter For Sedona

El Niño is responsible for our extreme cold weather this winter and especially February. Sedona had 5 low temperature readings below 20º with 11.2º the lowest temp so far this year. I am pretty sure this will hold as the lowest temperature. Last year only 1 day at 18.6º was recorded. The high temp for the month was 65.7º, where as last year it was 73.5º.  February had the most snowfall in any recorded month since starting in 2010 at 25.51 inches recorded at the Cottages At Coffeepot weather station.

Celebrating 25 Years of Sedona Film Festival – Starts February 23rd 2019

Sedona International Film Festival

February 23 to March 3, 2019

 Sedona International Film Festival

SedonaFilmFestival.org

It All Started Back In 1995…

Sedona AZ Feb 23, 2018 – The Sedona International Film Festival will begin festivities on Saturday February 23rd. It all started back in 1995, with a modest 3 day festival. The festival is rich in history. Every year it has grown larger and larger.

Silver Anniversary Edition of Sedona Film Festival

This is the Silver Anniversary edition and will be a big celebration of serving the communities.  Seven years ago, the Mary Fisher Theatre which provides a venue for theatre art, was opened all year long and it couldn’t be done without the generous support of the community of Sedona and the international film community.

An International Success

The Sedona Film festival has blossomed into a 9 day event with more than 170 award winning selections.  Independent film connoisseurs come from all over the world to enjoy these films as well as the beauty of Sedona and all that it offers.

Much To See and Do

There are special events being held and attended by celebrity guests, as well as panel discussions, workshops and anniversary celebrations that will culminate on Sunday, March 3rd with showings of the award winning films shown at the Harkins Theatre. Many guests will hold private Oscar parties afterward.

Coincides With The Oscars

The Sedona International Film Festival is planned to coincide with the week before the Oscars every year.  This is the 25th year of this festival and each and every year the venues have gotten better and the crowds larger.

Mary D Fisher Theatre

Years ago, all the events were held only at the local Harkins theatre and under tents.  Now, there is an upscale Mary D Fisher theatre where the home offices of the International Film Festival are headquartered as well as a beautiful venue for holding movie revues as well as live or televised events in all the arts.

 The Sedona Art Preforming Center

Located adjacent to the Red Rock High School, it is the newest and largest venue for film festival events. All the events and parking areas are well planned and traffic moves surprisingly well!  I do recommend getting to the events early so as to get a good seat.  All three venues where films will be screened are great areas to view films.

Look For Special Guest Appearances

As many of you know, many of the films will have special guests to add color commentary and take your questions.  You may also get to see some celebrities who will be taking questions or preforming. This year Ed Asner, Billy Zane, Lin Shay, Mackenzie Phillips, Amy Smart and Mariel Hemingway will be on hand to help the Sedona International Film Festival celebrate 25 years of excellence.

The Greek God of Winter Is Visiting Sedona in February 2019!

A Snowy Sedona February!

 ~ ~ ~

Greek god of the North WindThe Greek god Boreas, has decided to visit Sedona. He must have seen some of the pictures of the red rocks covered in snow and decided to take a mini vacation right smack dab in Sedona in Northern Arizona! I have been waiting for Persephone who is the Greek goddess of spring.  Oh! If you find that ground hog Phil…let him know I got his number!

The Weather Services Are Right On….So Far

We have been monitoring the weather for a couple of days now. The weather services have said that the high country which includes Sedona could get 5 to 9 inches of snow and the temps won’t even hit 40º. Normally, we can go a long time without hitting high temps this low. In 2016, there were 18 days of 70º+ weather with a high of 80º. There is a big difference this year.  It is a snowy Sedona February!

The Snow Stopped For Two Hours

The sun came out just long enough to evaporate all the snow on the pavement. But now the snow has started once again.  We are on the north side of 4 inches and rising. It will be interesting how the rest of this storm plays out.

A Low of 4º On Wednesday

We live in an area of a slight incline but both my car and my husband have 4 wheel drive.  My husband has a rock climbing jeep. That vehicle can go anywhere. I am not worried about the roads. The forecast shows clearing skies for Tuesday and Wednesday but that means super cold lows of 11º and 4º! There will be more snow on Thursday and Friday.

Sedona Weather for January 2019

Sedona weather January 2019

January came in with very cold temps and a half inch of snow as well! Last January (2018), there was one day that was in the 70ºs and 25 days in the 60ºs.  That January was the warmest in Sedona in 10 years. The temps were spring like temps which actually got our spring off to an early start. But this January the weather was a little colder….but not that bad. It was right in the middle of the pack.

New Year’s Day 2019 – Coldest So Far

In the first month of the year, there were only 9 days in the 60ºs with 16 days in the 50ºs. The lowest temp was on January 1st with a low temp of 12.8º. However, that particular day managed to get to 35.6º. Neither December 2018 nor January 2019had any days in the 70ºs. In the last two years, there have been no months back to back that did not have at least 1 day in the 70ºs, until this month.

Cold Moon Setting on Thunder Mountain….Sedona Arizona

Cold Moon Setting On Thunder Mountain…

Cold Moon on Thunder Mountain Sedona AZ

If you had a chance to see my blog post “The Joy of Life…” which I posted on December 23rd, you might have caught how my home sets east and west with wall to wall windows.  This gives those inside the home the ability to see the sun and moon rise and set, all year long.

Today was one of those days I looked out to see the sun rising on Thunder Mountain. Thunder Mountain sits to the west and I can see the reverse sunrise on Thunder Mountain and Coffeepot Rock. I happened to notice the sun setting and called over my husband to see it.

He grabbed his camera, switched to a 400mm lens and toke the picture above without a tripod! As you can see the detail is phenomenal. The sun does not rise in the east until close to 8 am this time of year.

The bottom image was taken a week after fall equinox after the sun had already risen. I share it to give the top picture some context.

Walt Disney’s Inspiration

For those who may not have seen other posts about Thunder Mountain.  Yes, this is the inspiration that Walt Disney used for the famous thrill ride of the same name.  Decades ago, Walt Disney had a home here in Sedona. He loved the area and visited as often as he could.

Tlaquepaque North

Tlaquepaque North is less than a year old and you would think it had been around for decades.  This Arts and Crafts Village with 16 Galleries to shop in was designed to look old. The original village on the south side of the street was built around the Giant Sycamores to fulfill a promise.  Local artisans were used to build the plaza and it was built without major plans.  Truckloads of Mexican artifacts were brought up from Mexico to incorporate into the buildings. Old doors, iron gates and other iron works, old carts and wagon wheels. You will see all of this within the walls of this village.  At Christmas time, it is transformed into Christmas village that you would find in the heart of Mexico.

Will Sedona Arizona Surpass 300 Days of Sunshine For 2018?

Sedona November 2018 Weather Summary

November 2018 to 2017 Weather Comparison

This was Sedona’s 3rd coldest November in the last 9 years. If you compare this November to last year (see 2017 chart below), You will see that Thanksgiving Day was above 80º in 2017.  Though this is quite unusual, Sedona had 19 days over 70º in 2017 but only 5 days over 70º this year.  Eleven days dipped below 32º in the early morning hours.

2017 Final Sedona Weather Stats

Mild Winter Months

The 2017 Chart was changed in 2018 to make it easier to see where the temperature falls daily by month. Everyone has a different understanding of what they feel is tolerable or comfortable weather. By separating the categories into 10º zones, it gives the reader a better understanding of how our temps change. It is very rare that temperatures rise above 105º or drop too much below 50º. The low humidity all year long creates more comfortable zones at the extremes.

The revamped 2018 chart shows that there are only 11 total days in the 40ºs and no days in the 30ºs for the entire year so far. For those who really don’t want to tolerate that kind of weather, Sedona is an option to live here during the winter months. More than two-thirds of November was in the 60ºs or 70ºs!  Nice weather considering!….

Lots of Sunshine!

Sedona as does most of Arizona, gets very few days of continuous overcast conditions.  Many of the storms move right through the state quickly. This creates more days of sunshine. Sedona is well ahead of last year for the number of days with sunshine. The area will hit 300 days within the next two weeks. If you are looking for an area that gets lots of sun. Sedona is a great choice to live.

Rand McNally has stated that Oak Creek Canyon is a top 5 scenic drive. Whatever time of year you decide to visit, drive the Oak Creek area. Fall is a very special time of year to drive this scenic highway.

Fall In Sedona Is Magical

Fall Color Sedona Cottage Style!

One of my favorite times of year is Fall in Sedona.  Many visitors come from all over to see the Fall color in Oak Creek Canyon and contrast that with the majesty of the red rocks. Autumn, along with Spring are our busiest seasons of the year.  Actually, our Spring season starts in mid-January and continues to the 4th of July!

I have a beautiful Japanese Maple in my courtyard that has every color of the rainbow in it right now. Probably because it may get down to freezing on some days but the inside of the tree remains just a little warmer and it also does not get as much sunlight.  Other plants and trees can turn bright yellow but this tree stands out with its deep orange and red color.

This last pic is one of my favorites. It is one of a kind… It was taken 3 years ago and you won’t be able to get this kind of pic again.  It was a motel for sale in Oak Creek Canyon.  So there was no real incentive to keep the beautiful yellow leaves off the pavement.  It finally sold and is a bustling area and well maintained.

There is nothing more beautiful than fall color in Sedona when it is at the peak.

September 2018 – Sedona Weather Stats Update and Summary

September 2018

Sedona Weather Stats Update

September Sedona Weather

September 2018 Sedona Weather Summary

September 2018 Sedona Weather Stats Update – Our weather transition to Fall starts in mid-August. So by September the low temps are in the mid- 50ºs. You can feel the crisp air and smell the pine. It is wonderful! We did have 8 more days over last year above 90º which brought the mean temp up by 3º. But by evening, the windows were open allowing the AC to be turned off. There were a couple of days we did not even turn the AC on. One day had a high of 67º! That particular day we got a cold rain. Total rain for the month was .78 inches.

300 Days of Sunshine?

We are a 9 months into the year and have 239 days of sunshine so far. We are on the way to another 300 days of sunshine for the year! We only need 20 days a month to reach that goal.

Finding That Ideal Weather Temperature Range

It is now September and we have a summary for Sedona weather.  I think it is important to re-introduce the three new categories added. I was trying to find a consensus on what is the ideal weather temperature range. The more research I did, I found that this was extremely subjective. Everyone has a different opinion of what they consider to be a comfortable range. So added the 3 ranges that were not accounted for on the previous chart.  You will find them in green.

An Example —> A Fairly Mild January 2018 !

If I tell you that the Sedona weather was fairly mild in January; without the green ranges above, you might not see it. But by including the 3 additional ranges, you can see that in January, there was 1 day in the 70º’s and 18 days in the 60º’s. So two-thirds of the month of January was above 60º!  This gives the reader a better idea of what the writer considers to be mild.  Also, it will help you identify what you feel is “comfortable weather”, and ultimately, your range is what really matters.

The Sedona Weather Almanac has the complete history from 2010 of rain and snow totals by month as well as mean temperature. It also has the highest and lowest temperature by month and the historic average for comparison.

Sedona Fall Color – Two Not So Secret Hiking Locations! Flagstaff – Aspens and Sedona – West Fork

Fall Color In Sedona Is Beautiful

….and It Is Finally Here!

Fall color in Soldiers Pass Cottages At Coffeepot

Fall color….I love all the seasons in Sedona, but fall is special to me.  This season is much shorter than spring but the number of people who visit Sedona in the fall is comparible. Great weather, lots of color, crisp mornings help to enthusiastically bring in fall.

Tourist Season

fall color Aspens - Flagstaff Sheri Sperry

Aspens – Flagstaff Snowbowl

The fall Sedona tourist season starts around the last week of September and goes through Thanksgiving.  Of course, the Christmas season is supported by the “Valley of the Sun”. Last year was a good example of a “Hallmark” experience! Many people like to go to Flagstaff to see the Aspens and then they come to Sedona for a meal. The above pic was taken Oct 2, 2017. It won’t be long now! Flagstaff sits at 7000 to 7500 feet, so fall color will start soon. Temps hover around 70º in late September.

Sedona West Fork Color Arrives Late October Into November

fall color - West Fork Trail - Sedona Sheri Sperry Coldwell Banker\

West Fork Trail

The hiking trails are also very crowded.  West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon sits about 5300 to 5660 feet and is the most popular area during this time. You can spend more time on the trails because the weather is milder than summer and generally you don’t have to worry about monsoon. West Fork trail follows Oak Creek and has towering red rock walls throughout. Various foilage will be in different stages of fall color. Expect heavy traffic (foot and car). Get to the parking area before 8 am.

Spring Season Lasts about 5 – 6 Months

Our spring tourist season starts in January, builds through the Cactus League baseball in February and goes through 4th of July weekend.  Tourism is lighter about 2 months a year scattered between mid July through August and part of December and a couple of weeks in January.

If An Image Scrolls Only One Second…

Will It Still Make An Impression?

I want to share this 49 second (Sedona Snapshot) video on YouTube with both sellers and buyers.  The goal is to show what can be done on social media channels to hold the attention of the viewer.

The average time a picture scrolls on a video is usually 4 seconds.  The bulk of these pics were cut down to aproximately 1 second each.  There is an intro and outro and the first two pics are a little longer than 1 second.

To grab the attention of the viewer, my husband decided to use an aerial snippet that shows the red rock views.

The Fast Pace of Social Media

It is my opinion that with the fast pace of social media, using the Sedona Snapshot Video is a great way to hold someone’s attention.  Years ago, we were told that to hold the attention of a viewer the video needs to be less than 3 minutes!  Then it was cut to less than 2 minutes and now it is below a minute!

If your videos are not held to 45-50 seconds, the viewer may go on to the next thing.  I follow the trends on social media and the marketing and syndication venues to make sure I offer the very latest marketing tools to assist my client in selling their Sedona luxury home. I coined the term Snapshot Video to show that the length of the video does matter with viewers. The fast pace of the images moving past, tends to keep viewers engaged because they realize the Sedona snapshot video is progressing quickly.

Instagram

When Sedona snapshot videos are uploaded to Instagram, the cover image (or frame) is picked by Instagram. Most of the videos that my husband loads are done on a Mac desktop and he has found that the videos we create have to go through video editing software.

When you use Instagram, the best way to get the thumbnail that you want to show up at the beginning is to add a screenshot or image at the very beginning. This applies to videos that are uploaded from a laptop or desktop computer to Instagram. An app that works well to upload pics or video to Instagram is the Uplet app.

  • Make the duration of the first image about one tenth of a second and when the video is uploaded to Instagram, that image will show first.
  • Reminder – Instagram video can only be more than 3 seconds and less than 60 seconds.
  • Convert the 1920×1080 mp4 video to 640×480 wide pixels to make sure that the video remains in frame.

You can use Youtube video on just about all the other social media outlets. The areas I put these videos are: Facebook and the business page, Google +, Linkden and Linkedin business, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

Is Monsoon 2018 Over In Sedona? Discover Arizona Climate Difference

Posted by On

Fire In The Sky Monsoon

Sedona Weather Summary Through August

Sedona August Weather

Sedona-Weather.com

Is Monsoon 2018 Over?

In Arizona, our big weather season is nearing the end. There has been little indication of monsoon throughout the state since the first week of September.

A note for those not familiar with monsoon.  It is a season in and of itself. We do not add season when speaking of monsoon. As with hurricanes where you need 80º water temperature to form them, dew points affect monsoon development. Weather patterns have not changed as of now but the dew temps need to be at 55º or above to form the storms.  We may see monsoon before the month is done, but peak monsoon is long over.

When talking about extreme weather conditions such as monsoon microburst and wind events, southern Arizona has a higher risk of a major event.  Sedona is surrounded by red rocks and mountains which minimizes conditions for major wind events and virtually eliminates dust events or haboobs.

Climate Differences ~ Sedona Sits In The “Sweet Spot”

Waking up to fresh crisp air is very invigorating. It is one of the little things I enjoy about living here. In Sedona, our low temps have been in the 50ºs since August 23rd.  I believe this keeps our high temps from shooting over 100º.  The last day we were over 100º was on August 19th.

monsoon 2018According to 12 News Weather, today the Phoenix area is under an “Excessive Heat Warning”.  The temperature is expected to get over 110º for the 23rd day this year. Phoenix averages 18 days OVER 110º normally. The highest number of days was 28.

About 10º to 15º Difference In Temperature From Other Arizona Areas

When talking about climate or weather conditions, Sedona sits in the “sweet spot” of
Arizona. It is located in a transitional zone between the Sonoran Desert and the Colorado Plateau, Being in the transition zone, the weather is more mild in the summer and winter months than other areas such as Phoenix in summer, and Flagstaff or Prescott in winter.

Sedona has had a total of two days that reached 110º in 8 years.  In those same eight years here in Sedona, our average number of days over 100º is 21. Most of those days hang around 102º.

Sedona and Arizona ~  An Arid Environment

Ten to fifteen degrees makes a big difference when looking at extremes. Because Sedona and Arizona are in an arid environment, heat does not feel as oppresive because of the lack of humidity. There is a condition called “virga” that is prevalent in Arizona. To simplify, it is a condition where rain is falling from a cloud and evaporates before it hits the ground.

People who visit as well as residents, have to be very cautious out in the heat because heat exhaustion and sun stroke can sneak up on you. Keep exercise to a mimimun, drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors as much as possible.

What About Winter Conditions?

Looking at extremes in cold temperatures, Sedona has had only two days (total), below 32º.

Snow Appears to “Disappear!”

One of those days was January 1st, 2011 and the other was March 20th, 2012.  No other days since have had a high temperature that is below freezing. This means that there are very low instances of ice accumulation. Generally a small amount of snow or ice may linger in shaded areas. In other areas, the snow actually evaporates rather quickly after a snowfall. It appears to disappear!

In areas such as Flagstaff and Prescott as well as the White Mountains, snow takes much longer to melt. You can see parking lots full of dump truck loads of snow and it does not go away quickly. Fortunately, our arid climate makes winter conditions more bearable even in the colder climates of Flagstaff and Prescott.

The Four Seasons of Sedona

In Summary

When I moved to Sedona, I wasn’t sure how the winters were going to be. I am a fair-weather person and not interested in living in a cold climate. I found out that Sedona offered the best of all scenarios for four-season weather.

We get it all, but in very moderate doses. It is rare that I have to wear anything but a sweater in winter. In Summer, there is little humidity. The arid air dissipates the affects of any humidity. You just don’t feel it.

Fall and spring are so beautiful and very long seasons. Can you imagine springtime that starts early February and goes through mid-June? How about fall? Temps start hitting the 50ºs in mid August and freezing temps don’t start until around Thanksgiving. I can’t ask for anything more.
